Description

The Brand Consultant is part of the Brand Engagement and Governance Department in Vanderbilt University’s Division of Communications and is an individual contributor responsible for conducting brand management activities to support initiatives targeting external partnerships and processes. This position will focus on working with key external and internal partners to manage the marketing and sale of merchandise and other royalty-generating opportunities. This role will report to the Director of Brand Management.

About the Work Unit :

The Brand Consultant will be a member of the Brand Management unit within Brand Engagement and Governance. Brand Engagement & Governance is responsible for creating, protecting and promoting the Vanderbilt University brand through strategic partnerships and activities that will advance the visibility of the university, safeguard the integrity of the brand and increase trademark licensing revenue to support the mission of the university.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:

  • Works closely with Director of Brand Management to develop and implement strategies to increase royalties from the sale of licensed merchandise and other trademark licensing arrangements with external partners

  • Establishes new relationships and creates strategic partnerships with local organizations including major corporations, non-profits, universities, and local professional sports teams to identify potential opportunities to increase the university’s brand visibility

  • Manages relationships with key licensees and retailers to increase their awareness of university initiatives and activities, and assists university areas in the understanding of current market trends affecting consumer perceptions of collegiate licensed products

  • Identifies and pursues campus-wide opportunities for corporate sponsorships in collaboration with university stakeholders including Athletics, and assists in negotiating the terms of the ensuing arrangement

  • Ensures adherence to contractual terms and conditions governing the use of university’s name and trademarks by external parties

  • Works closely with internal and external researchers to investigate the loyalty, perception and recognition of Vanderbilt’s name and brand by various demographic groups

  • Measures and analyzes licensee’s performance in distribution channels and product categories to develop appropriate strategies to maximize sales and achieve the department’s revenue goals

  • Works closely with the university’s licensing agency and the Office of the General Counsel to respond to trademark infringements

  • Conducts research and comparative analysis of peer institutions for trademark licensing activities

  • Leads local and national marketing programs in partnership with the university’s licensing agency

  • Assists in the selection of suppliers licensed to sell merchandise in the retail market

  • Responsible for approving merchandise orders for retail sale, and provides support for internal campus merchandise orders

  • Oversees donation requests for merchandise received by the university

  • Works with the division’s social media team to promote local and national programs encouraging the purchase of licensed merchandise

Job requires Bachelors and 3-5 years of relevant experience
