About the Position and Responsibilities

The Business Information Librarian for Collections will support collection development and management in support of the curriculum and the faculty research at the Owen Graduate School of Management, as well as business-related research across campus. The librarian will manage the budget, reviews and selection of research materials and databases to support faculty and student business research at Vanderbilt. Librarian liaison duties to the Operations and Strategy faculty at the Owen Graduate School of Management.

Collection Development

  • Evaluate the database mix, request trials, and identify information duplication and gaps, and propose subscription changes

  • Keep up to date with database changes and enhancements and communicate with library colleagues

  • Stay abreast of emerging business information products and campus business information needs

  • Manage the collections budget

  • Work with business information vendors on subscription agreements

  • Work with information vendors on complex access and authentication requirements that accompany business information resources

  • Assist faculty in determining appropriate information vendors and pricing for research data sets

  • Assist faculty in reviewing vendor agreements

  • Partner with campus stakeholders to identify joint funding opportunities

  • Represent the Management Library as needed in relevant committees and institutional initiatives

  • Keep abreast of developing technologies at Vanderbilt and beyond; understand which new technologies add value Library services and processes; implement and apply chosen technologies to serve users

Business Information Specialist , Management Library

  • Provides high-level subject specific reference assistance to Owen faculty and students

  • Liaison to Operations and Strategy faculty at the Owen Graduate School of Management

  • Provide course-integrated library research and instructional materials for business

  • Supports interdisciplinary initiatives across academic units that require expertise in business librarianship.

Other Duties

  • Participates in library-wide committees, project teams, and development efforts

  • Participates in development and the profession


Internal : Frequent verbal and written contact with various departments, staff, and faculty members to exchange information.

External : Occasional contact with vendors outside of Vanderbilt University.

Student/Faculty/User : Daily face to face communication with students, faculty and library users to provide library information and assistance.

Qualifications and Experience:

An ALA accredited M.L.S and three years’ experience in an academic or research institution and a degree in business, economics or a related field is highly preferred. Corporate experience of five or more years in lieu of an academic business background is also acceptable. Other qualifications include demonstrated reference, instruction, and collection development experience; evidence of potential for professional contributions and ongoing professional development; outstanding interpersonal and communication skills; strong public service ethic; collaborative skills. Ideal candidates will also possess the ability to shift priorities in a rapidly changing environment; to work across a broad-based constituency, to communicate a positive library image; and have an awareness of current concerns and developments in librarianship.
