About the Position: A Research Assistant I position is open to provide support to the Meiler Lab. The role will perform administrative, research and technical duties of the laboratory. Primary responsibility will be production of recombinant proteins for study by NMR, X-ray Crystallography and a variety of biophysical methods. The individual will work closely with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and laboratory manager in a dynamic laboratory environment. The ability to function independently as well as part of a team is critical. Excellent organizational and communications skills (both verbal and written) are essential, as is attention to detail.
About the Department: Research in the Meiler laboratory seeks to fuse computational and experimental efforts to investigate proteins, the fundamental molecules of biology, and their interactions with small molecule substrates, therapeutics, or probes. We develop computational methods with three major ambitions in mind:
To enable protein structure elucidation of membrane proteins theprimary target of most therapeutics and large macromolecular complexes such asviruses;
Designproteins with novel structure and/or function to explore novel approaches toprotein therapeutics and deepen our understanding of protein folding pathways.
Understandthe relation between chemical structure and biological activity quantitativelyin order to design more efficient and more specific drugs.

Key Functions and Expected Performances:
Assist in Research and Development
Preparation of buffers and reagents
Production of vectors for protein expression
Bacterial overexpression of protein
Writing and updating laboratory protocols as needed
Perform, interpret and evaluate research
Perform test experiment procedures relating to laboratoryactivities
Assemble and compile research data for presentation and/orpublication
Assist in collaborative efforts with other institutions and/orindustry
Maintenance of laboratory equipment
Shipment of purified proteins to collaborators
Proper storage and maintenance of protein stocks
Participate in weekly and bimonthly meetings to discussproject progress
Other tasks as directed by supervisor
Ensure the most effective operation of the laboratory
Maintain procedures manual
Maintain chemical inventory
Maintain an inventory of supplies
Anticipate the laboratory needs and order supplies for on-goingand future experiments
Negotiate pricing for sales and service of equipment, supplies,and contracts
Update laboratory program website using existing platforms
Ensure website contains current information
Perform administrative duties
Prepare lab calendar
Respond to requests of students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty
Update list of seminars as announced
Reservations of various meeting rooms
Coordinate guest visits including itineraries
Flexibility to complete non-routine assignments
Assist laboratory manager in administrative aspects of the RosettaWorkshop
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in biochemistry, biological sciences, or related field and a minimum of 2 years of experience in a research setting, the latter can be substituted with a Master’s degree.
Preferred Education, Skills, andExperiences:
Degree in Chemistry or other related science field
Experience working in a research lab
Experience working with students and faculty
Experience in E. coli transformation, protein expression andbacterial cell culture is preferred
Experience in purification of proteins by both bench top andautomated chromatographic methods is desired
Experience in flow cytometry
Molecular biology experience is preferred
This is a full-time position; 40 hours per week; Monday - Friday.
Salary is dependent upon education and experience.
