About the Position:

Vanderbilt is seeking individuals interested in working on the development of algorithms and systems for the processing and analysis of medical images and in the integration of these systems into the clinical workflow. These persons will implement and document defined research products; be involved in single or multi-project, multi-task programming and/or engineering in support of department's projects with direction from faculty and research staff.

Electrical engineering has been primarily responsible for the information technology revolution that society is experiencing. The development of large-scale integrated circuits has led to the development of computers and networks of ever-increasing capabilities. Computers greatly influence the methods used by engineers for designing and problem solving. Computer science blends scientific and engineering principles, theoretical analysis, and actual computing experience to provide students with a solid foundation in the discipline. Degree program emphasis is on computing activities of both practical and intellectual interest and on theoretical studies of efficient algorithms and the limits of computation. Specific strengths of this department include cyber-physical systems, cybersecurity, radiation effects on electronics and artificial intelligence.

Duties, Responsibilities, and Expected Outcome s:

Engineering and/or programming design, implementation, analysis, maintenance or experimentation, as directed by team leader

  • Assist in the development, implementation, and testing of medical image processing algorithms for surgical guidance

  • Integrate these algorithms into fully automatic pipelines and integrate these in the clinical workflow

  • Develop cloud-based solutions and databases to permit inter-institution collaborative efforts on a very large scale

  • Adhere to existing and develop/recommend new technical standards

  • Maintain familiarity and build expertise with emerging technologies and techniques related to project and research goals.

Technical documentation and reporting

  • Provide team leader with accurate documentation of all systems within project research area of direct involvement or responsibility.

  • Provide team leader with data to assist in evaluation of project research direction and provide input on solutions as necessary.

Effective delivery of technical progress/presentations in written and oral forms to department research staff and faculty

  • Communicate regularly, effectively and professionally with research team, team leader and faculty regarding large scale study using the above mentioned platform (medical imaging).

  • Share research knowledge, product and research processes with team.

Qualifications

  • Candidates must have a Master’s degree and 2-3 years of relevant experience

  • Prefer candidates who have a PhD and 5+ years of experience

  • Candidates should have good communication and interpersonal skills

  • Programming experience with C/C++ is required.

  • Background in image processing and experience with VTK, ITK, databases, and scripting languages is desired.

  • An MS in EE, CS or related field with experience in the aforementioned areas is required.
